Anarkali Suits look elegant and rich and are trending in fashion. Not only that, this Indian attire also takes us back to the court of Mughal Emperor Akbar, in whose court, this Indian Suits was the dress that the courtesans wore.

It was named after the beautiful courtesan Anarkali, meaning “blossoming pomegranate” who died as Emperor Akbar had punished her by building a wall around her. She was punished for having a relationship with prince Salim or Jahangir.

A sneek-peek into History

Anarkali’s name has been surrounded by romance, tragedy and mystery. The taboo love story is of Anarkali and Prince Salim and the repercussions of the star crossed love birds.

Anarkali used to wear flattering kurtis, a waist length tight fitting bodice and voluminous flared somewhere below the knee length. She used to wear churidar styled bottoms and dupatta made of sheer material.

The Anarkali suit as it came to be known had half or full sleeves & modest necklines back then. The materials used were cotton muslins, silk, brocade, organza and velvet. The use of block printing, floral motifs, golden thread work around precious and semi-precious stones and floral motifs were made popular by the Mughals.

During Mughal period the dance performed at the emperor’s court was known as mujra, and the performers wore fitted- flowing kurti and churidar which became famous as Anarkali Suits. Bollywood too, played a major role in making this outfit fashionable.

The iconic film Mughal-e-Azam which was released in 1960 featured the lead actress Madhubala playing the role of Anarkali, dressed in Anarkali Suits. Later the trend continued in the 70s and 80s and never went away.

Also recently the Bollywood divas like Deepika Padukone, Sonam Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt and many more have been rocking the Anarkali dress in the latest design and style.

Anarkali suits worn today have undergone many changes from that of Mughal era considering the current fashion trends. Synthetic fabrics are mixed-matched along with stunning designs, patterns, embellishments and embroideries.

The type of fabric used in latest Anarkali suits include chiffon, net, georgette, lace and viscose. Embroideries like phool patti, appliqué, chikankari, bagh, Kashmir kashida, gota, soof, kantha stitch, ahir, kutchhi, kathiawari, badla, patchwork, Mirror work and much more is used in Anarkalis’ these days.
