Vitamins are nutrients that the body needs in small amounts to work properly and stay healthy

Vitamin is organic molecule that the body requires in small amounts for optimal metabolism. The body can't synthesize these essential nutrients and must obtain them through the diet. The human body, fortunately, has an extensive supply of these vitamins, which are necessary for optimum management and health. In short, vitamins are a group of nutrients that help the body grow, reproduce, and survive. Some act as signals, regulate the metabolism of other substances, and function as enzymes. The discovery of vitamins was not a singular event. It took years of research in chemistry and biology before these nutrients were given their proper names. They also have different benefits for humans.

The Public Health Clinical Medicine and Social Policies, across the world are challenging for micronutrient deficiency due to lack of food security, monitoring and education in the developing and underdeveloped region. These deficiencies in children mostly due to vitamins A and Vitamins D, iodine and iron deficiency along with clinical anemia and rickets. Also, various chronic diseases among adults, which includes osteoporosis, osteomalacia, colorectal cancer, thyroid deficiency and cardiovascular diseases are primarily linked to deficiency of vitamin D and iodine.

Vitamins are generally classified as either fat soluble vitamins or water soluble vitamins. Fat-soluble vitamins (such as vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin D, and vitamin K) dissolve in fat and tend to accumulate in the body. While, water-soluble vitamins (such as vitamin C and the B-complex vitamins, such as folate, vitamin B12, and vitamin B6) dissolve in water before they can be absorbed by the body, and thus cannot be stored. Vitamins perform hundreds of roles in the body. They help shore up bones, heal wounds, and bolster the immune system. They also convert food into energy, and repair cellular damage.

The name vitamin comes from the Greek word pantos, meaning ‘everywhere’, which indicated that proper nutrition was dependent upon introduction of one or several nitrogen-containing amines into the diet. Unless a doctor recommends it, avoid taking more than 4,000 IU per day, which is considered the safe upper limit. Taking an excessive amount of any one vitamin can cause serious health problems. The best approach to get a variety of vitamins, and in the proper amounts, is to adopt a healthy diet. This involves an emphasis on fruits and vegetables, dairy products, low-fat protein, beans & legumes, and whole grains, among others. In short, vitamins are essential to human health, as they help keep the body working properly.
