The flag of the United States Marine Corps

The flag of the United States Marine Corps (also known as the battle colour or standard) is used to represent the U.S. Marine Corps as well as its subsidiary units, formations, and formations.

Histories

A U.S. Marine flags colour guard dips the U.S. Marine Corps Flags for a performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner" in April 2005.

Although very little information is available about the flags worn by early American marines, there are indications that the Grand Union Flag was carried on board by the battalion under Captain Samuel Nicholas, New Providence Island, 3 March 1776. It is possible that the Gadsden Flag was also carried on this expedition.

The standard used by the Marines in the 1830s and 1840s was a white field with gold fringe and featured an intricate design featuring an anchor and an eagle at the center. This flag had the legend "To the Shores of Tripoli" across its top prior to the Mexican-American War. The legend was changed to "From Tripoli to the Halls of the Montezumas" shortly after the war.

During the Mexican Civil Wars, Marines on the field carried a flag similar to the national flag. It consisted of red and white stripes and a union. However, the union featured an eagle perched upon a shield representing the United States and a half-wreath beneath it. The entire design was surrounded by 29 stars. The Marines were the first to wear the national colors, the Stars and Stripes. The middle red stripe of the shirt has "U.S. Marine Corps" embroidered in yellow.

The Marines carried a distinctive standard at the Vera Cruz landing in 1914. The Marine Corps emblem was surrounded by a blue field and a laurel wreath. The emblem was surrounded by a scarlet ribbon that carried the words "U.S. Marine Corps" and a scarlet ribbon below it with the motto "Semper Fidelis".

On April 2, 1921, orders were issued that all national colours should be made without yellow fringe and the U.S. Marine Corps logo should not be embroidered on the red stripes. An order dated March 14, 1922, was issued to end all use of national colors with yellow fringes or words on the flag. After colours War I, the Army began attaching silver bands with inscriptions that listed specific decorations and battles. This practice ceased on January 23, 1961.

Marine Corps Order No: Marine Corps Order No. 4 of April 1925 named scarlet and gold the official colours of the U.S. Marine Corps. These colors were not included in the Marine Corps' official standard until January 18, 1939, when a revise colour sign was approved. This design was the same as today's Marine Corps Standard.

After World War I, it was possible to inscribe battle honours directly onto the colors of a unit's colors. However, this was not pact colour sue to the sheer number of honours and limited space. The procedure was eventually discontinued. A Marine Corps Board recommended the adoption of an army system for attaching streamers on the staff of organisational honours. Marine Corps Order No. 157 finally authorized such a system. Marine Corps Order No. 157, dated 3/11/1939, is still in use. Embroidered devices are used to indicate special recognition or repeat awards. Contrary to the Army and Air Force flags, only one streamer can be used for a single campaign. Streamers that require more than eight devices are an exception. This is the most that a streamer can hold. Only authorized devices are for campaigns that were part of the 20th or 21st centuries.
