Sudarshan Venu- Fourth-generation TVS Group member and Joint Managing Director of TVS Motor Co, he was instrumental in the acquisition of Norton Motorcycles and is currently focused on positioning the company as a smart technology player.Sudarshan Venu, the fourth-generation member of the TVS Group and Joint Managing Director of TVS Motor Company, made his first large inorganic move early this year with the acquisition of the legendary British brand Norton Motorcycles.

TVS Motor Company announced their Rs 153 crore acquisition of the renowned British brand, Norton Motorcycles, a little more than three weeks into the national lockdown, on April 17 to be exact. In the context of Covid-19, with everyone pent up in their houses, this was welcome news in India.

The fact that it was also the first major inorganic move under Sudarshan Venu, the fourth-generation member of the TVS Group and Joint Managing Director of TVS Motor Company, was even more noteworthy.

Sudarshan had remarked after the news, "There's a big chance for us to expand up and create value in this process." Norton will expand its footprint in the United States, Australia, Malaysia, and Thailand, in addition to its native market of the United Kingdom. He went on to say, "Hopefully, India and other rising markets will be a part of this soon." "Really connect with committed and enthusiastic Norton customers throughout the world and engage with them as we attempt to rebuild this brand," he says.

Sudarshan will have reason to be delighted with the acquisition of Norton, as he is the son of two successful entrepreneurs in the form of Mallika and Venu Srinivasan, who are the CEOs of Tractors and Farm Equipment (TAFE) and TVS Motor Company, respectively. The more difficult task of restarting the company and ensuring that the new growth storey gets off to a good start begins today.

Sudarshan is also well-known in the business for being the driving force behind TVS Motor, with a strong leadership team in production, R&D, branding, and marketing. Venu Srinivasan, his father, will undoubtedly be the driving force, but the baton has definitely passed to the next generation. And it's only natural that this is the case, given that today's young purchasers are always on the lookout for smart technology in their motorcycles and scooters. Sudarshan is only 30 years old and has a deeper understanding of their demands, as seen by products like the NTorq 125 and the more recently released iQube electric scooter.

The youthful TVS heir would be well aware that these are difficult times. Due to a succession of taxes that have made products more expensive, the previous few years have not been easy in the two-wheeler industry. Demand is soaring once more, and Sudarshan will be eager to take full advantage of the situation.

The tie-up with BMW Motorrad, which is already underway and has seen the deployment of 300cc-plus bikes, is another major priority area for TVS Motor. The challenge is to grow the business while also planning the future of Norton and ensuring that top-selling TVS products like Apache and Jupiter continue to sell well.

In fact, along with the Bajaj Auto Pulsar, the premium Apache motorbike brand just passed the four-million-unit sales barrier, establishing a niche for itself in the sports market. Sudarshan and his crew will be glad to see that overall two-wheeler sales have remained in the double digits since production began following the lockdown. The statistics for October and November both increased by 20% year over year.
