Are Dental Treatments Safe During Pregnancy?

Dental treatment is necessary at every single stage of your life, even when you are growing new life. Most dental treatments can continue as normal during pregnancy, but there will be some minor changes that are important enough for your dentist to know. As such, you should let your dentist know if you are pregnant during a dental checkup.

It’s an old wives’ tale that going to the dentist while pregnant is risky for developing babies and moms-to-be. In fact, just the opposite is true – good dental hygiene is part of a healthy lifestyle for everyone. The mouth is a major gateway to the blood vessels and digestive system. As such, your oral health can be a good indicator of your overall health.

2nd Trimester is the safest time when dental procedures can be performed on pregnant women under consent of her gynecologist. Our dentists in Udaipur provide treatments like Tooth colored Fillings, Root canal treatments etc. during 2nd trimester of pregnancy i.e. 4th 5th and 6th month.

During pregnancy, you may notice some changes to your oral health, including one or more of the following conditions:

Pregnancy Gingivitis

Tooth Erosion

Tooth Mobility

Dental Caries

Here are some things to disclose to our dentist if you’re pregnant:

How far along you are in your pregnancy

If you have a high risk pregnancy

If you have noticed any loosening of your teeth, sore gums, redness, or bleeding in your mouth

Any medications you’re taking

Here are some simple ways you can help minimize your risk or oral health issues when you’re pregnant:

Maintain routine care with our dentist including exams and cleanings.

Uphold good oral hygiene with brushing two times a day and flossing at least once a day.

Eat a well-balanced diet and minimize the consumption of sugary snacks.

Local Anesthetics during Pregnancy

If you’re pregnant and need a filling, root canal or tooth pulled, one thing you don’t have to worry about is the safety of the numbing medications our dentist may use during the procedure. They are, in fact, safe for both you and your baby.

Dental X-Rays during Pregnancy

Yes, it's safe to get an X-ray during pregnancy. Although radiation from dental X-rays is extremely low, your dentist or hygienist will cover you with a leaded apron that minimizes exposure to the abdomen. At our dental clinic in Udaipur we will also cover your throat with a leaded collar to protect your thyroid from radiation.

What about dental care after the baby is born?

After childbirth, continuing with your own dental care and your baby’s is very important. Continue brushing your teeth regularly and purchase an infant toothbrush and infant toothpaste without fluoride to keep the baby’s gums and budding teeth healthy. We also advise new parents to avoid putting babies to bed with bottles because it can lead to tooth decay.

We advice all the pregnant women to visit for regular dental check-ups during pregnancy so proper oral hygiene could be maintained. At our dental clinic in Udaipur we are committed to provide finest dental treatment to all the pregnant women and other patients as well.
