Permanent residents of Canada are encouraged to carry a substantial PR card at all times. Aside from allowing permanent residents to show proof of status, the PR also allows people to travel freely throughout the country.
Permanent residents can apply for a new PR card if their current one is about to expire or has lapsed voluntarily.
To renew a permanent resident card, a candidate must submit a completed application in print to one of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada's (IRCC) Case Processing Centers for PR cards. If an application is completed and the permanent residents meet all requirements, another PR card will be issued upon arrival.
It should be noted that a person's permanent resident status does not end when their PR card expires. Individuals who go through the authorization process risk losing their PR status. In the following circumstances, you may lose your PR status:
- A removal order is made against you and comes into effect
- You become a Canadian citizen.
