Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB중계) has been Korea's highest level of baseball since 1950. There are 12 teams in the league, divided into two circuits: the Pacific League and Central League.
Korea is unique in some aspects of NPB, including:
• There are 143 regular-season matches (which begin in late March, early April, and end in September).
• Tie ballgames are played after 12 innings. This is so fans can catch the last train home.
• Six-man rotations of pitching (teams play six days per week, with Mondays off), so each pitcher pitches once per week.
• There can only be four Non-Korean "import" players on each team's roster. This means that there can be no more than three pitchers or three hitters. A team's four foreign players cannot be all pitchers and all hitters. It is easier to understand who qualifies for import players by delineating what a "domestic player" is. Domestic players are Korean citizens who have lived in Korea for nine years or more and played amateur baseball there.
• Managers have a significant influence on the game. This includes requiring players to play "small baseball" with only two outs and one pivotal runner at second base.
• The ballpark offers a welcoming atmosphere for visiting team fans. There is a designated cheering section, and the away team's fight songs are played before the 7th. Hats and merchandise from the team can be purchased at the park.
All-Star celebrations and ceremonies mark the midpoint of the Korean baseball season. Interleague play is also featured in the schedules between the Pacific League teams. This league employs a designated batter and features fast-paced games. The Central League offers a more traditional style of playing baseball and could be compared to the (pre-designated hitter era) National League of MLB.
