Uses of Monel Alloy 400

What is Monel Alloy 400?

Even though MONEL Alloy 400 has been around for a long time, it remains a versatile option. We don't frequently see alloys stay popular for so long across many industries, but MONEL 400 bucks the trend, just like another oldie but goodie, INCONEL 625. This versatile material, on the other hand, predates even the popular INCONEL 625 for a long time — it was first introduced in 1905. It was and is popular because of its key property: a copper concentration of 28-34 percent, which distinguishes it from commercially pure nickel while retaining many of the same properties as Nickel 200/Nickel 201.

The fact that MONEL 400 may be used in so many diverse industries, including marine and chemical processing, suggests that it will remain popular. For almost a century, it has been utilized for petroleum distillation tower internals, fasteners and fittings, pumps, and valve internals. Process vessels, heat exchanger pipework, and fuel storage tanks are among the other applications.

Its qualities make it ideal for high-risk scenarios, such as those seen in the explosives and pulp/paper industries. It's also used in rocketry, which is extremely hot right now - we're wondering if any are floating around in the space station right now with Tim Peake (whose trip made our list of favorite things in 2015)!

But what makes this metal so adaptable? Over a wide temperature range, it exhibits exceptional strength and hardness. On the one hand, the alloy's strength and hardness make it ideal for sub-zero temperatures, and it doesn't undergo a ductile-to-brittle transition even at liquid hydrogen's lowest temperatures. It's also useful in oxidizing atmospheres at temperatures up to and including 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. It can also be used at higher temperatures in a decreasing atmosphere.

The alloy is not only well-suited to extremes of temperature, but it also has strong corrosion resistance, which is a desired feature. It has been demonstrated to be more resistant to oxidation than higher-copper alloys. Its low corrosion rates in running seawater are one of the reasons it is so useful in maritime applications. In most fresh and industrial waterways, it is also resistant to stress corrosion cracking, and pitting.
