Micheaux Film Festival

Micheauxfilmfest.com is a pioneering African-American film festival located in the heart of the Mississippi Delta. We show films that have gone unnoticed by mainstream audiences and pay tribute to Oscar Micheaux, a pioneer of African-American filmmaking.

The Asian Film Festival is run by a group of volunteers who are committed to preserving African-American cinematic heritage and honoring its legacy. Our goal is to provide an environment where filmmakers can showcase their work and engage with others who share their passion for cinema.

Oscar Micheaux was born on December 18, 1884 in Metropolis, Illinois to former slaves. He was raised by his mother alone after his father died when he was only five years old. After attending Tuskegee Institute for one year, he became a traveling secretary for the National Baptist Convention. In 1915, he moved to Chicago where he began writing plays and novels. He also produced four films in 1920's: The Homesteader (1919), The Symbol of the Unconquered (1920), Body and Soul (1924), and Veiled Aristocrats (1926).

Micheaux Film Festival aims to be an annual event that showcases both classic and new works by independent filmmakers of color while celebrating Oscar Micheaux’s legacy as an innovative filmmaker who brought diversity and representation to early American cinema through his prolific work as an actor and director during the silent era.

Micheauxfilmfest.com shares his legacy by screening films that are rarely seen anywhere else and bringing together diverse groups of people who are passionate about cinema, art, history and culture in general.
