Guidance For Selecting College and Universities for Overseas Education

One of the most exciting aspects of Selecting colleges and Universities to study abroad is that you literally have a whole world of options, with thousands of universities all over the world to choose from. Each of these schools will offer dozens, if not hundreds, of different courses, making it difficult to even decide what or where you want to study.

Here are a few steps to guide you to begin your search for colleges and universities for overseas education.

  1. Decide the program you want to pursue

That is your starting point – identify your preferred path by listing your interests and strengths. Investigate thoroughly the modules, program, and duration offered for your preferred subject. While you're at it, look into employment opportunities and long-term benefits.

  1. Look into the International University Rankings

An obvious way to look at it is to ask, "Which universities are the best?" However, things aren't as simple as that. There are numerous ranking systems developed by various organizations that use different metrics to compile their top university lists.

While you are researching and learning about your program in foreign countries and different universities, you should focus on whether the universities that are ranked at the top offer your desired course and whether or not the country is well-known for the course. You can visit the official websites to learn about their program structure, resources provided, and so on to determine if the course is a good fit for their list of priorities.

Once you've gathered all of the necessary information about the country and course, make a list of your concerns and contact the university/college via email or phone.

  1. Check out the college faculty

Check to see if the university has a well-organized faculty that can provide expert knowledge. Investigate the program modules offered and determine whether the subjects will benefit your career development and growth. Figure out the possibilities for research projects and the outcomes of university studies.

  1. Find out about the scholarships and cost

It is very expensive to study abroad. As a result, when researching universities/colleges, inquire about their fee structure and whether they offer a financial aid program. Most universities and colleges offer financial aid. Scholarships are available through endowment committees, which can be found on the internet. Another option is to apply for student loans from local banks.

  1. See if you meet the eligibility criteria

Always check the entry requirements for the subject you have chosen in your desired country and university. Does it have a program at the level you want to enter? Is it a diploma or a degree program? Recognize your preferences and choose accordingly. Several Canadian colleges, for example, offer a postgraduate diploma rather than a master's degree. Similarly, the United Kingdom offers two types of master's degrees: teaching and research.

Check the required academic scores as well. Do you meet the same requirements? Would you be required to take another test in addition to the English proficiency test? Do you believe you'll be able to carve out time in your schedule to prepare for additional tests like the GMAT, GRE, or SAT? Answers to these questions are a major deciding factor for Shortlisting college.

  1. Learn about other people's experiences studying abroad

If you are unsure about experimenting with study programs and universities that meet your other criteria on paper, you should look into what previous international students in a similar situation have experienced.

You might come across people who have dealt with common cultural shocks, misconceptions, and challenges, or who can provide you with very specific tips and advice. You can read about their experiences in our student experience articles or connect with them on the alumni portal or LinkedIn.

If you need help after Shortlisting universities, a good study abroad counselor can walk you through the logistics of when you can apply to study and when you can start your course in various locations. They can go over your profile in-depth and assist you in mapping your career and personal goals to the right country where you can thrive.
