How to Add Sand Texture to a Drywall With Mud

Making use of plaster mixes that go by the name of joint compound spackle, mud, or joint compound is the base for creating textures on walls. There is a myriad of options for textures, from sanded to textured to adding glitters or swirls, colored gravel or whatever else you want to imagine. The mud is dry just like you left it, but slightly lighter in hue. Sand is one of the simplest ways to add sand regardless of whether you color your mix, or do not.

Step 1

Fill the seams or holes in the drywall prior to the textured clay. Apply joint compound to fill in the holes and to smooth the seams. Dry, sand, and do it again until you have a smooth wall.

Step 2

Mix together an assortment of joints and liquid in a 5-gallon bucket. Use a metal Masher to blend the ingredients. Slowly add the water making a note of each addition to ensure you are able to replicate the recipe for subsequent batches.

Step 3

Add fine sandy sand into the mud and the water mixture. Sand is available in a variety of sizes, also known as meshes. The greater mesh, the more fine the sand. Naturally, using sand that is finer produces a more refined texture that's not so obvious as the coarse web of sand. Mix the sand with the mud until you've equally distributed it in order to achieve the desired texture.

Step 4

Spread the sanded mud over the surface of the drywall with a joint knife of 6 inches. Try experimenting with a piece of spare drywall to discover the texture you like. A few ideas are sponging wet mud and using a paintbrush to create alternate brush strokes, rolling the mud using an art roller, or making swirls using your joint knife.

Step 5

Cover the entire wall, since the surface of the drywall tends to absorb moisture from the mud. Dry it in a matter of minutes.
