Ransomware Attacks Are on The Rise: Here is How You Can Stay Safe

The world is going more digital every passing day. However, with increasing digitization, cybercrime has surged too. Cybersecurity experts have been baffled to see different forms, types, and patterns of cyber breaches in the past few months.

An internet cybersecurity company SonicWall conducted research on cyberattacks by diligently tracking cyber activities. The report made a shocking revelation that there was a rise of 1885% in ransomware attacks worldwide. In North America, there was a steep increase of 104% in ransomware attacks in just one year.

The company identified top threat vectors as:

  • Ransomware
  • Cryptojacking
  • Encrypted threats
  • IoT malware
  • Zero-day attacks

This suggests that cyber threat hunting has become the need of the hour.

What harm can ransomware attacks do?

Ransomware attacks are getting more high-profile than ever. In 2021, they disrupted supply chains and caused widespread downtime resulting in business loss of millions of dollars. In addition, they severely damaged the reputations of several organizations.

For example, the world’s largest meat supplier JBS USA was forced to pay an $11 million ransom in bitcoin last year to stop further damage.

How do stay safe?

You can take several preventive measures to ensure that your IT environment stays safe from ransomware.

1. Block their entry

Prevention is better than cure. There are three most common entry points for the ransomware:

  • Phishing for accessing remote services.
  • Targeting vulnerable systems
  • Deliver malware through emails.

All of these can be done by stealing login credentials. However, you can protect your IT assets, reputation and data by detecting such attacks well ahead and remediating them. Potent automated threat hunting solutions may help you secure your IT environment from all angles. They are designed to detect cyberattacks well in advance by keeping a watch on the entire IT environment.

2. Prepare an incident response plan

What if the attackers succeed in launching a ransomware attack? It would help if you had an incident-response plan ready in such a situation. IBM-sponsored Ponemon institute’s study reflects that you can save $1 million per incident if you can respond to the ransomware in less than a month.
