How Can We Save Children From Malnutrition?

Child-under-nutrition is caused not just by inadequate nourishment but also by frequent illnesses, poor childcare, feeding and health-seeking practices, insufficient maternal nutrition and lack of access to health and other social services. According to NFHS-5, 89% of children between the formative ages of 6-23 months do not receive a “minimum acceptable diet’”. Sponsor a child and save malnourished children in India. Childhood rescue is important.Being a child-focused organisation, World Vision India carries out child health and nutrition programmes in multiple locations that cater to the children and their mothers and adolescents.

It is also widely recognized that Maternal and Child Undernutrition is the underlying cause of nearly half (45%) of the mortality of children under five.World Vision India has been strategically focussing on addressing malnutrition and for the past few years. World Vision India works to address the causes of malnutrition with special focus on children below five years of age, pregnant women and mothers through counselling, emergency feeding programmes, caring and health-seeking practises, nutrition gardens, the training of health workers and infrastructure development at Anganwadis (child care centres). Pregnant women are motivated to attend all necessary ante-natal care sessions, consume deworming tablets and rest well. They are equipped to identify early danger signs and encouraged to maintain personal and environmental hygiene. Mothers and caregivers of children under five are given awareness on the importance of nutritious food intake. Nivas and Bondona, a young couple from a village in Murshidabad, West Bengal, had had the misfortune of experiencing five continuous miscarriages. To support her husband economically, Bondona toiled in the paddy fields and performed all the household chores as well. This heavy workload, coupled with poor nutrition and ignorance about the warning signs and symptoms, resulted in her declining health and miscarriages. Hearing their plight, the area Care Group promoter, Maria, invited Bondona for a meeting to discuss and counsel her.

After becoming a part of the care group, Bondona learned about the precautions that pregnant women should take during the gestation period. Maria helped Bondona and Nivas detect early symptoms, counselled them on the benefits of good nutrition and measures that need to be followed by pregnant women. With this new knowledge, the couple felt confident to try again and are now parents to a healthy baby boy.

Good health and nutrition are essential for both the mother and the child. Mothers health is often neglected, which inturn affects the child. To prevent malnutrition among children, it is important for mothers to stay healthy and well-nourished.
