However, in 1972, Canada ceased routinely immunising people against smallpox.

According to Tam's deputy, Dr. Howard Njoo, this suggests that anyone can get monkeypox.

"I would assume that monkeypox affects the entire community," Njoo remarked on Friday.

In the event of a biological crisis, such as a laboratory exposure, Canada keeps a modest stockpile of smallpox vaccination.
