UK Student Visa (Tier 4) Requirements

International students who are not from the United Kingdom or the European Union must apply for a student visa. You can only apply for a student visa if you want to study in the UK for a full-time degree programme. Part-time courses do not qualify for student visas. A Tier 4 Student Visa is a points-based system that determines your eligibility. In this blog, we will discuss the UK study visa requirements.

Student Visa Rules – An Introduction

You need 40 points to apply for a student visa. This is achieved by:

Course confirmation

You must get a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from a UK Visa and Immigration-approved university (UKVI).

On the UKVI Tier 4 Sponsor list, all universities must have been granted or requested for Highly Trusted Status (HTS) (30 points). CAS numbers can be issued by 'A rated' colleges as well. The 'A' rating is a 12-month transitional rating, and all 'A' rated colleges must apply for HTS status within that time frame.

On the Study London website, all universities have a Highly Trusted Status (HTS). You may learn more about each London university by looking at their profiles, or you can use the course search to locate the ideal course for you.

Funding

You must show that you have enough money to cover both your course tuition and your monthly living expenses (10 points).

The average annual tuition fee is £12,000, however it can range from £8,000 to £36,000. If you study in inner London, you must also show that you have £1,265 for each month of your studies (up to a maximum of nine months) to cover living expenses. As a result, if you plan to study in central London for nine months or more, the maximum amount you'll need is £11,385.

This is true for all students interested in studying in London. If you are enrolled at the University of London, you will be deemed to be studying 'in London.'

To find out if you qualify for a UK study visa, go to the UK Visa and Immigration website. Further information is also available on the UKCISA website.

Visa Application

To apply for a Tier 4 student visa, please go to the UK Visa & Immigration website and fill out the online application form. International students from all countries (excluding North Korea) must apply for their visas online. As part of your application, you'll need to have your fingerprints and photograph (known as 'biometric information') taken at a visa application centre.

Immigration Health Service Charge

To acquire access to the UK's National Health Service, all nations from outside of Europe who stay in the country for more than six months must pay a 'health surcharge' (NHS). Students must pay a health premium of £150 per year (or £75 for 6 months or less) when submitting their visa application online. Applicants for UK visas must pay in advance for the entire duration of their stay. Read our Health Advice for International Students for more information.

Keep in mind that you can only apply for a visa after receiving a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. Check your eligibility for a UK Student Visa, but wait until you've been accepted onto a course to apply. Once you've been accepted to a programme, your selected university can help you with the visa procedure.
