Nairobi-based Astral Aviation has made headlines for its A320P2F launch operation, partnership with an Indian drone start-up, TechEagle, and now a new GSA. Sanjeev Gadhia, Founder & CEO of Astral Aviation, spoke on the company's vaccine and pharmaceutical business development, as well as the necessity for a GSA in India, at the Air Cargo India 2022 event. "We have observed many pharma companies in India are showing interest in working with us under a win-win situation. And now we have a new GSA in India, Zeal Global, who will manage and promote the pharma products," said Sanjeev Gadhia, Founder & CEO, Astral Aviation.
The cargo airline company has been transporting covishield vaccine on behalf of UNICEF. In collaboration with Scan Global Logistics, Astral Aviation brought Covid-19 vaccinations from UNICEF Supply Division and World Health Organization (WHO) in its DC9F from Nairobi to Juba, South Sudan in September 2021. The vaccines were transported by Network Aviation Group's B747F from Liege to Nairobi, where they were picked up by Astral Aviation.
"We handle vaccinations in two ways. If the vaccine numbers are limited, we have collaborated with Air India as smaller numbers can fly on Air India or the Dreamliner from Ahmedabad and Delhi to Nairobi, where they will most likely be redistributed throughout the rest of Africa. When the quantities are significant enough, we fly in and collect the vaccines and deliver them at the last mile. I believe it's working extremely well for us right now," said Gadhia.

Astral Aviation has announced that it is ready to support the distribution of the recently discovered Covid-19 vaccines across its scheduled network of 15 destinations within Africa and a further 50 destinations available on charters with its fleet of 14 freighter aircrafts.

Aquila Air Capital, a specialty finance platform focused on commercial aerospace, announced the signing of operating leases for three Boeing 757–200F freighter aircraft with Astral Aviation.“SkyExec Capital Jets acted as arranger and will service the lease during the term.
The aircraft are expected to be delivered to Astral starting in November 2021, upon completion of their scheduled maintenance,” reads the release.
