How to find the perfect summer hat

A great summer hat should serve two roles - it should keep you protected from the scorching sun and it should keep you in style for the season. How do you find hats that do both? Read along to find out.

When shopping for summer hats, you should look for four factors - brim size, ultraviolet protection value (UPF) factor, choice of fabric, and the color of the hat. Let us see how each of these factors comes into play.

Brim Size refers to the length of the brim or the visor. As the brim is your first line of defense against the sun, these factors cannot be ignored. The longer the brim, the more sunlight it can block. Ideally, the brim of your summer hat should be 3 inches or longer to maximize protection from direct sunlight.

Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) is the capacity of a fabric to resist the harmful UV rays from the sun. Although a wide brim can protect you from direct sunlight, it does little to keep away the reflected rays. This is why you need to choose apparel such as hats and t-shirts with UPF of 30 points or above. Hats with UPF 50+ protect you from 98% of UV rays and are the perfect choice for the sunny season.

The fabric of your cap also plays a role in the level of comfort and protection you get. Some cap materials naturally resist the radiation from the sun while others have been designed and treated to do so. Cotton contains natural factors that can effectively absorb UV rays. Polyesters and other synthetic fabrics are also effective in reflecting the radiation and keeping you protected. Besides these, you can also choose other densely woven fabrics like denim, canvas, wool, or linen for summer hats

Most people find a hat style they like and pick one in their favorite color. However, this can be a mistake when choosing your summer hat. While lighter colors can keep the temperature down, studies show that dark colors are better at absorbing UV rays without letting them reach your skin. So you might be better off choosing brighter shades, such as red, yellow, or orange for the sunny season.

So how do you pick the perfect summer hat based on these factors? Read CapBargain's blog ‘How to find the perfect summer hat’ for great tips on how you can do that.
