Creative works such as literature, drama, music, and artwork are protected by copyright. Film and recording producers also have this right. Upon registering for a copyright, a proprietor gains exclusive rights to reproduce, replicate, and distribute the work. Additionally, they can grant authority to another entity for the same purpose.
In order to legally own the rights over the work, you must register for copyright. After that, you control how it is communicated to the public, reproduced, adapted, or translated.
An idea is protected by a copyright. Patents protect the idea itself, whereas copyrights protect only the expression.
Copyright entitles the author to produce copies of the work, to exhibit and perform it publicly, as well as to distribute copies of the work. During the lifetime of the author plus 70 years, the author has exclusive rights. On the other hand, a work made for hire has a copyright that lasts for 95 years.
To be protected by copyright, a work must be original. The work should be unique in the following ways:
- The author(s) must have created it instead of stealing from another work
- The ability to be creative at least on a basic level is required.
