Rann Utsav Tent City 2022–2023 Activity Area: A local arena that draws a worldwide audience.

Local Kutchi artists work as daily wagers and transform into musicians, singers, and percussionists during Rann Utsav. This transformation is only possible because Rann Utsav Tent City provides a larger platform for local artists to showcase their talents and keep the artist alive within them. Music instruments such as Ravan Hatha, Ghada aur Tagaara, and Mor Chhand were a revelation because we had never seen such instruments before, which are nothing less than a legacy passed down through generations.

The Siddi community is an ethnic group that originated in East Africa and later settled in Gujarat. Surprisingly, they also speak Gujarati as well as any other Gujarati! The Siddis were brought as slaves from Portuguese colonial territories for the Nawab of Junagadh 300 years ago. Today, they practise only a few of their original customs, such as the traditional Dhamal dance and the use of their percussion instrument, Mughar Bund.

Another major draw is the Bhavai performance at Rann Utsav — The Tent City. There are 365 different types of Bhavai, a dance form derived from the word ‘Bhaava,’ which means expression or emotion. Bhavai features two main characters, the narrators ‘Rangla’ and ‘Rangli.’ Humor is an essential component of any Bhavai performance, even in mythological stories, making it one of Gujarat’s most popular dance and theatre forms.

Local artists can perform for an enthralled audience from all over the world in the dedicated space known as the Activity Area at Rann Utsav 2022 — The Tent City. Come and be enchanted!
