On a hot day in early 1927, Herbert Winlock was staring sullenly at what he had unearthed in the great temple complex at Deir el-Bahri across the Nile. Pharaohs were gods to ancient Egyptians, yet he looked at statues of a pharaoh that were demolished and ruined.
The statues were those of Hatshepsut, the sixth pharaoh of Egypt’s 18th dynasty, one of the few and the most successful women to lead the country.
It was unusual for a woman to become Pharaoh of Egypt. Rather than becoming the ‘great wife’ of a male ruler, Hatshepsut became the male ruler herself. She was given a full throne name, and statues of her as a male king, complete with beard, were erected.
Her reign was generally calm, and she was able to initiate a construction program that culminated in the erection of a massive temple at Deir el-Bahri in Luxor. She also embarked on a successful sea expedition to the land of Punt, which is located somewhere along Africa’s northeast coast, where they traded with the locals and returned with “marvels.” Despite an attempt to erase Hatshepsut’s memory from the face of the earth, people know her legendary life story.
