What is a resume?

Resume is a French word which means “summary.” It contains all the professional information about a candidate’s education, work experience, and skills to a recruiter. It displays the candidate on paper which makes an image of the candidate in the recruiter’s mind.

A resume or curriculum vitae is a document which is demanded by every recruiter before applying for a job.

Who exactly is FRESHER?

Generally, candidates applying for a job for the first time after completing their education, with no prior job experience are called freshers. Even if you have experience in a particular field but you have planned to change the field, you are considered as freshers.

Types of resume formats

  • Reverse chronological resume style - This type of resume format is best for people who have relevant work experience for the position they want and it is the most common resume format.

  • Functional/ skills-based resume style - The skill based format is a better substitute if a candidate lacks proper experience because they are a student or fresher. This type of resume generally focuses on the skills of a candidate instead of job experiences.

  • Combination resume format - A combination resume format is a great alternative for candidates with a broad range of skills. If a job demands various knowledge then this type of format is best for the candidates, they can showcase all on their resume.

Why do we need resumes?

  • Grabs the attention of recruiters: A resume, if appropriately designed, will definitely give the person a chance to stand out from the crowd. The design and summary of the resume might stick into the recruiter’s head.

  • Open the door to the interview: nowadays, companies use various resume-tracking software like ATS, that selects the resume based on the relevant keywords, so try to include skills which are required by the company for that particular job. Now along with the recruiters you have to impress the computers too.

  • Can connect with the candidate in future: a resume can help the employers to connect with the candidate in future in case an opportunity comes up.

  • Helps to get a candidate organized: this makes the candidate more organized in their approach. This also helps them to assess their abilities and skills. According to which they can easily evaluate job opportunities for them.

  • As a safety net: the job opportunity can knock at your door anytime so always update your resume and be ready for the job, and it comes in handy.

How to write a resume?

A candidate must include these things in their resume to stand out from the other candidates:

Contact Information

Make sure to mention the right contact information in your resume because the recruiters will ultimately use it to reach out to them after the screening process or for future use. Make sure to enter the following details in specific order:

Professional summary

The candidate’s objective and what they aspire to can make a huge difference in the eyes of an employer. For a fresher it is very important and highly recommended to add a personalised summary.

Educational background

To mention a candidate’s qualification and educational background on a resume is very important. The educational qualification must be in descending order, i.e. the highest qualification on the top and the lowest qualification on the bottom. The year of passing and the name of the college must be mentioned. You can also add your marks or percentage on the resume if necessary. For example,

Degree/qualification (e.g. B.Com Honors)

University name (e.g. Delhi university)

Year of graduation (2019-2022)

Work experience

Here, along with a small explanation of the work done in pointers one needs to mention all their internships. If you are a fresher, you need to mention your leadership experience, projects, or volunteer work. Include all the experiences in the past 6-12 months.

Skills

Include both your hard/technical skills and soft skills to make your resume stand out of the crowd.

Hard skills - programming languages (python, Java), Google Analytics, Facebook Marketing, Video Editing etc.

Soft skills - teamwork, self-motivation, interpersonal communication skills etc.

Additional sections

In this section you need to mention things apart from your professional information like languages, courses, interests, and awards.

Conclusion

Nowadays, getting a job as a fresher is like walking on eggshells, your one move can get you your dream job or you’ll get rejected like thousands of other candidates. Mention all your points which are your assets. To make the lack of experience you need to focus more on your skills and abilities. An employer will consider your skills if you don’t have any experience and see whether you fit for this job or not. First impression is the last impression so be on point with your resumes.
