Why people prefer life changing retreats

Lately you may have heard of "life changing retreats" that are all the rage in the self-help world. These high-priced retreats offer guests a once in a lifetime experience, surrounded by like-minded individuals looking for guidance and inspiration.

Even as a former skeptic and self-confessed bachelorette, I have to admit that the idea of a sensual, yet blissful experience with strangers was appealing, so I decided to try one out.

After some research, it sounded like a very luxurious experience with plenty of opportunity for deep personal growth. Plus there were even rumors that couples were encouraged to bring their significant others along...for the right price, of course. This is because "all meals are included".

To add to the appeal, I learned that these retreats were being held in exotic locations around the world and offered a sense of camaraderie with other singles. The promise of meeting "the one" seemed especially appealing because, as we all know, if you're single, you spend at least 40% of your time doing nothing but obsessing over what should be and what shouldn't be happening. I had to try it.

The day of the retreat arrived and I was thrilled to meet some like-minded people and get away from my crazy life for a few days. As I checked in, I received a bag with my name on it and was treated to a full body massage by the group's masseuse. After the massage, we were shown to our rooms where we were greeted with champagne, fruit and cheese plates and bedtime chocolates. I then proceeded to my room where I was welcomed by a basket of chocolate, fruit and breads. I took out a book and settled in for the weekend.

By now you're probably wondering, what happened? What about my other half? Was I single after all? After a few days of being pampered by the staff and giving each other massages, I was led to a private room to meet my husband. We sat down and talked, as they normally do at these things.
