A great way to enjoy a few days' hikes or a trek on the southern high hills of the massive Annapurna Himalayas. As well faces the grand vista of Dhaulagiri and Manaslu range at one glance from Ghorepani and scenic Poon Hill.

 

The Ghorepani and Poon Hill, are located on the historical trail to Tibet on the ancient Trans Himalaya Salt Trade Route. Where caravan of mules, and horses passed through Ghorepani ups and down, laden with merchant goods of wools, crops, and spices. 

 

Hence the name ‘Ghode-Pani’ then became Ghorepani means a place for watering the beast of burdens, mules, and horses. 

 

Over the past four decades, Ghorepani has flourished as one of the best tranquil and scenic hills in the Annapurna Himalayas. Due to its serene surroundings and pristine wilderness of dense rhododendron and pine forest along with scenic mountain views. At present one of the most sought viewpoints among foreign travelers as well as for interested Nepalese travelers.

 

Ghorepani poon hill trek provides excellent accommodation and food in its many good lodges with restaurants, serving comprehensive food menus to hungry trekkers. Located on a high ridge above 2,885 m / 9, 466 feet high. At the base of famous Poon Hill and a popular view spot, which is at 3,210 m / 10,531 feet. Ghorepani is a beautiful, scenic village surrounded by rhododendron woods, at the midpoints on the route to Mustang and Pokhara city.      

 

Trekking Routes to Ghorepani & Poon Hill:

The only place where one can reach Ghorepani & Poon Hill in the shortest time. Is from the scenic city Pokhara where most trek and adventure around Annapurna Himalayas and beyond starts and ends.

 

A few hour drive to the foothills of Annapurna Himalaya range either Nayapul town or from the nice village of Bhirethati. Where walk follows the ancient Trans Himalaya Salt Trade Route of Nepal and Tibet. The route leads through Hille and Tirkhedhunga farm villages a place with beautiful waterfalls. 

 

Spending overnights at Tirkhedhunga village in the comfort of a simple lodge but with clean rooms. The next morning, cross a bridge and then steep climb up the stone-paved steps reaches Ulleri village. Which is at approx. 1,873 m / 6, 145 feet high after climbing more than 400 m from Tirkhedhunga. A large village on terraced slopes of a high hill, (at present motorable dirt road has reached Pokhara as an option for interested trekkers). 

 

From Ulleri village onwards to Ghorepani, populated by Poon Magar the hill tribes of Western Nepal. At Ulleri having a refreshing stop after a long haul uphill, pleasant winding ups to Ghorepani. The walk leads through Bhanthati and Nangethati a small settlement amidst a forest of rhododendron and pine trees. 

 

These small places offer wonderful rest stops for refreshing drinks or lunch and small snacks. The walk continues ahead into a forested trail with a gradual climb reaching a welcome gate of Ghorepani village. A place with several good lodges, options for trekkers can stay on the lower side of Ghorepani. 

 

As well as walking up to higher Ghorepani Deurali, the popular overnight stop is Ghorepani Deurali, perched on a high ridge. Amidst beautiful rhododendron forest with views of Annapurna peaks with Dhaulagiri Himalaya range, which is the world’s 7th highest peak.

 

Spend overnight in the comfort of a nice cozy lodge, with large dining rooms having a potbelly iron stove. Keeping the room warm, nice, and cozy from the cold freezing temperatures. 

 

The final highlight of the adventure to Poon Hill View-Point:

 

Next early morning an hour hike up from the lodge at Ghorepani, reaching on top Poon Hill. Just in time to catch the first rays of streaming sunrise that shines on the white peaks. The sunrise touches with a golden glow on top of Annapurna, Manaslu, and Dhaulagiri's array of snow peaks. Poon Hill is the highest point of this short adventure at 3,210 m high, a grassy sloped hill with a view tower.

 

Enjoy the glorious morning facing stunning sunrise with a 360° wide panorama of the world’s four highest peaks. Namely the 7th highest Mt. Dhaulagiri, the 8th high Mt. Manaslu, and the 10th highest Mt. Annapurna with a range of peaks.

 

Includes the majestic Machhapuchare Himal the famous Fish Tail, and the virgin unclimbed peaks of the whole Himalayan range.

 

The return journey to Pokhara:

 

Several choices of alternative routes to Pokhara from Ghorepani, after scenic views of sunrise and panorama of Himalayan peaks.  

 

Depending upon your choice and duration of time, one can head back on the same way back to Pokhara. The other longer route of a day is to walk east up to high Deurali ridge. Where route leads down and up to Tadapani a small settlement and then reaches a large Gurung village at Ghandruk. 

 

From Ghandruk after staying overnights, walk down to Kimche village, located on the road ahead. Where few hour drives reach Pokhara in good time, the journey leads through Bhirethati and Nayapul town.

 

For people interested to enjoy more of the areas around the scenic sides of Annapurna Himalayas. Can take the long downhill to the low warm village of Tatopani, a place with a natural hot spring. After a refreshing time in hot pools at Tatopani village drive to Pokhara via Beni and Baglung towns.

 

Seasons for Ghorepani & Poon Hill:

 

One can visit Ghorepani and Poon Hill in nearly all seasons of the year, except the monsoon wet rainy times. Which is from mid-June to August months.

 

The best time is in spring from March to May, when days are longer with enough sunlight hours. In spring the hills of Ghorepani and Poon Hill are lively and bright with wildflowers in full bloom. Especially the rhododendron of various species as well as a national flower of Nepal.

 

Around Ghorepani, the whole place will be a natural garden filled with rhododendron and other wildflowers.

 

The other next best season is autumn/fall from September to November one of the high times for trekking around the Himalayas. Where most days are crystal clear for views and walks, but much colder morning and night time.

 

One can enjoy it during the wintertime of Christmas and New Year holidays, day are clear for excellent views. But shorter days due to sunlight hours and much colder and freezing temperature in the morning and night time.
