This splendid mansion is ideal for relaxing and enjoying your next vacation, family get-together, or business event.

A Little History

Moffitt Manor is listed in the national registry of historic places. The manor is locally known as the "House of Fortune ."It is a six-bedroom, three-bathroom estate. The restored mansion also has two showers, two claw-foot tubs, numerous fireplaces, a huge chef's kitchen, three family rooms, one parlor (an elegant sitting room), imported crystal chandeliers, and two foyer curios that are nicely decorated during the holidays. It can sleep at least 14 people and has an impressive 4400 square feet of living space. The mansion is located downtown Altamont, high in the mountain region of Tennessee.

The mansion was built in 1885 and owned by Harris B. Northcutt. The house is the most visible and most prominent place in Grundy County. Harris Northcutt was born into a very prominent family of 15 children. His parents were General Adrian Northcutt and Sarah Cope, who were pioneers in the area. During the Mexican war, General Northcutt was a Captain. Later in his career, he became a Brigadier General in the Tennessee Militia. In addition, General Adrian Northcutt ensured that Altamont was selected for the Grundy County Seat. His son H.B. Northcutt was knowledgeable about the business and operated his father's businesses until Harris died in 1910.

At some time, a descendant of Northcutt's, Fannie Moffitt Stomp, moved into the mansion. Miss Fanny Moffitt inherited thousands of acres and quite a bit of wealth. The family royalties were from coal mining. In addition, Miss Fanny increased her riches by lumber harvesting from the property.

It is apparent throughout the estate that Fannie was a big collector of interior décor. The manor has many paintings, antique mirrors, and collectibles. However, the wealthy Fannie Moffitt was an old maid spinster. She died in 1955 at was only 62 years old. Unfortunately, she did not leave a will. Moreover, $15,000 in cash and royalty checks were found in the house. The house furnishings were also valued at $15,000 at the time. Miss Fannie Moffitt was buried in a copper casket worth $7,500.
