The other day, Julie sent me some reading material: a cautionary tale of a popular West Elm sofa that is notorious for rattling, losing its buttons and, sometimes, falling over. the center of the holiday. . (It has since been pulled from the market.) He did nothing because I was afraid of the promise of bed. For years I avoided buying a long lasting sofa, even though I wish I had a place to read and work next to my bed. I'm afraid of shelling out $2,000 (plus shipping), only to have the sofa look like its ugly self when it arrives, or mess up the first time I move. Not to mention the ease of getting it back if I don't see it.

Buying furniture is a bit of a gamble: with big-box furniture retailers and disruptors littering the scene, it's hard to know what quality you're getting for the money. you (and, we learned, expensive doesn't necessarily mean good). Sofas in particular are a problem. Ask anyone who's bought one: it's a big investment - and for some, it's their first big purchase after graduating or moving to a new place. All of this made us wonder: how do you know if a sofa will last before you buy it? What are the most durable things you want? And what red flags should cause you to pull out your wallet and move on? To guide us, we asked London designer Rita Konig, who has bought quite a few sofas in her day, for her floor plan. Check out this checklist to make a safe, healthy and sustainable investment.

Rita Konig: "You can see that sometimes, under the padding, some manufacturers use chipboard, which is not strong or strong. Make sure your frame is 100% hardwood.

(And, we must note: even better, "kiln-Fikiere" hardwood. Avoid metal and softwoods. Also consider the joint: it may seem obvious, but avoid sofas connected only with nails, staples or glue. (Wooden brackets, metal screws or brackets, or "corner clips" - added with glue and nails - are stronger options.)
