Get Familiar with Kilimanjaro Facts to Know More about it

Kilimanjaro is unlike any other mountain on Earth. You'd be missing out if you didn't know that this mountain is not only the highest in Africa, but also has a number of other fascinating and unusual claims to fame as per Tanzania local tour operators.

One of the world's Seven Summits is Mount Kilimanjaro.

All seven of the world's highest mountains collectively make up the Seven Summits. They range widely in altitude, geography, and climbing difficulties. Some people strive to climb all seven of the world's highest peaks. Some people want to complete the "Adventurer's Grand Slam" by going to all seven continents as well as the North and South Poles. Of course, Everest is the most well-known of the Seven Summits, and Kilimanjaro is likely the second most well-known. As can be seen, Mount Kilimanjaro ranks only fourth among the Seven Summits. The summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania, is the highest point on any mountain in the world. The majority of the highest mountains in the world are found within massive mountain ranges.

This peak sits right on the equator.

Mount Kilimanjaro stands barely 205 miles from the equator, in the country of Tanzania. People didn't believe early explorers who claimed to have seen glaciers atop Kilimanjaro because they reasoned that ice couldn't grow so close to the hot, equatorial sun. Recent research has led scientists to conclude that glaciers recede and then expand during the Earth's ice ages.

Kilimanjaro is inactive, not extinct.

The term "stratovolcano" is used to describe very big volcanoes like Mount Kilimanjaro, which are composed of ash, lava, and rock. Both Shira and Mawenzi have ceased all volcanic activity, therefore it is safe to approach these peaks. In a nutshell, they have lost access to new lava flows. Kibo, on the other hand, is a dormant volcano that has the potential to erupt again. Scientists consider a volcano to be dormant if it hasn't erupted in the past 10,000 years, but they expect it to resume activity at some point.

Kilimanjaro has been conquered by both young and old.

Anne Lorimor, an American woman of 89 years of age, was taken by Ultimate Kilimanjaro® to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. She beat out Dr. Fred Distelhorst, who was 88 when he reached the peak, to claim the global record in 2019. Coaltan Tanner, an American, became the youngest person ever to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro in 2018. Ashleen Mandrick, at age six, beat Montannah Kenney, who was seven at the time, to the title of youngest female summiter.
