The Fight by Microsoft and Amazon for the Pentagon's JEDI Program

The Pentagon is rethinking its cloud computing strategy, and Amazon and Microsoft aren't the only companies in the race to win the contract. Both companies have been criticized for their bid-rigging practices. A Defense Department inspector general probed the bid-rigging allegations and found one official had violated rules when he left the government to work for Amazon. But the inspector general was unable to draw conclusions about the role of the White House in the matter, because key officials were not made available to comment.

JEDI contract

The JEDI program was designed to store and share vast amounts of classified data, as well as provide the Pentagon with advanced artificial intelligence technology. In the summer of 2019, the program was thrust into the public eye, when President Donald Trump publicly questioned the award of the contract to Amazon. He has been feuding with Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos ever since his campaign for the White House. A cancellation of the program could significantly delay the use of cloud computing by our troops.

The Pentagon plans to replace JEDI with the Joint Warfighter Cloud Capability. It plans to solicit bids from both Amazon and Microsoft for the project. In the meantime, the Pentagon may award multiple contracts for the project, potentially giving Amazon a second chance.

The Pentagon's JEDI contract fight has taken the cloud market by storm. While the Pentagon intends to award the contract to Amazon and Microsoft, other vendors will also be considered, as long as they meet the contract terms. Amazon and Microsoft have each been competing aggressively in the cloud infrastructure market.

Amazon was widely believed to be the frontrunner for the Pentagon's JEDI contract. But then it sued the Defense Department over its decision, alleging that the Pentagon discriminated against it because of a personal feud between Bezos and Trump. Amazon even demanded to testify before the courts that the decision was biased in favor of Amazon, arguing that the decision was biased.

Legal challenges to JEDI award

Microsoft and Amazon have argued that they have met the requirements of the JEDI contract. Amazon has the advantage over Microsoft in market share and is the only company to hold the Defense Department's highest security certification, Impact Level 6. The company claims that Microsoft's bid did not meet these requirements, but the Department of Defense argues that the company prioritizes superficial labels over technical performance. In the end, the decision is expected to be a long time in the making.

However, the JEDI contract has faced legal challenges soon after it was awarded. Amazon Web Services sued because it claimed the Pentagon's selection process was flawed. The companies claimed the process was biased and unfair and was influenced by politics. After a judge ruled in their favor in April, the Pentagon decided to reconsider the contract award.

Amazon and Microsoft are now in the process of appealing the decision. The lawsuit filed in the U.S. federal courts alleges that the Pentagon violated the rules of procurement by considering political factors. Amazon has also accused the Pentagon of bias in its decision making. However, the government claims that Amazon's allegations came too late. The lawsuit claims that Amazon's actions were politically motivated, and the DoD used its animus against Amazon in its selection process.

The lawsuit was filed after the Pentagon's announcement last year that it would choose Microsoft over Amazon in its $10 billion JEDI contract. Both companies were viewed as frontrunners for the contract. However, Amazon claims that the Pentagon's decision was influenced by the president's feud with Bezos.

Plans for future cloud-computing contracts with Amazon

The Pentagon has plans to solicit proposals for future cloud-computing contracts from both Microsoft and Amazon. It also plans to investigate other cloud service providers. Amazon has complained that the process used to select cloud services providers was not competitive enough. The company is considering whether to appeal the award.

The Pentagon plans to award multiple cloud contracts to different vendors for five years. The contract value is not yet set, but the Pentagon expects the new contracts to be worth billions of dollars. Amazon and Microsoft will have to submit proposals that meet the government's requirements for handling sensitive data and enhanced cyber security controls.

Amazon Web Services is already a major cloud provider for the government. The company recently won a $10 billion contract from the National Security Agency for cloud computing. The contract is part of the agency's overall effort to modernize the Intelligence Community's GovCloud database.

Cloud services are not directly dependent on each other, though. Amazon offers third-party services through its AWS Marketplace. AWS's first automated service is the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, which pools virtual resources to meet the needs of users. AWS has also launched a managed Kubernetes service known as EKS. Both of these services are available at varying prices depending on the needs of the customer.

Amazon has been a leading provider of cloud computing services, so Amazon is a popular choice. In fact, Amazon and Microsoft are already in competition with each other. Both companies have made cloud computing a top priority for their businesses. The competition for cloud computing services is a huge business. Amazon and Microsoft are competing for the same contracts.
