How to Choose Right Paint Thickness Gauge?

The Coating has a significant role in the manufacturing and quality control departments as it is generally the outermost layer of the product. Many industries use it to improve the aesthetics of their product, and for others, it is a way to give a protective shield. Whatever the purpose is, it is crucial to record the thickness of the paint coat to take production-related decisions.

As it is a decision so crucial, one has to get apt readings. It is only possible if you choose the right equipment that gives precise readings on which an expert can rely. One wrong value can lead to major hazards; hence, there are risks involved in choosing the paint thickness gauge!

Choosing the apt paint thickness gauge

There are multiple factors based on which one can choose the best thickness gauge to measure the depth of paint coating. Let’s take an insight into these factors:

Material of coating and the base

Some equipment works on the eddy current principle while some follow the magnetic induction. Which one will yield better results depends totally on the material of the coating. For example, if the base is steel, you can go with the gauge that uses magnetic induction, but if it is aluminum, opt for the eddy current testing method. Remember this information to make a befitting choice!

State of coating

If the top layer of coating is not smooth, the handheld paint thickness gauge might not give precise results. It happens because the probe cannot move smoothly on the surface, and the measurements will fluctuate.

Surface specification

If the coating is in a liquid or semi-liquid state, you should use non-contact thickness gauges to measure the depth. But, for the dry paint coating, you can go for the dry film thickness gauges to get accurate results.

Location

When the area you want to measure the thickness is too close to the edge, the magnetic field goes beyond the test sample. Due to this, the reading that you get also gets affected. If you have a similar situation, choose the paint thickness gauge with the thin pin probe.

There are only a few factors based on which you can make a choice. Whichever equipment you plan to invest in, make sure to get a superior quality product from a reliable brand. Do your research and explore different options in industrial equipment before you narrow your choices to one!
