Seasonal fruits to help boost your immune system

The weather is changing and the flu season is upon us. And the only way to protect yourself from this epidemic is to strengthen your immune system. Some other ways of preventing and shortening the flu are washing hands regularly, getting enough rest, drinking tea, exercising, and trying to keep your stress levels down. However, a lot of these factors might not be in your control. What you can do, however, is consume a healthy and balanced diet full of green vegetables and seasonal fruits

Fruits that can help you in strengthening your immunity

Many people make the mistake of overlooking fruits when planning their diets. However, fruits are a powerhouse of nutrients capable of boosting your immune system, especially in the case of seasonal fruits. When you purchase seasonal fruits, you can rest assured that they are fresh and have not been sitting on the shelf for weeks. Moreover, when you purchase organic food products, you are ensuring that you aren’t consuming any artificial pesticides and fertilizers. The following are some fruits that will help you in boosting your immune system:

1.     Grapefruit

Grapefruits are packed with vitamin C. They also contain a great amount of vitamin A and fiber. This helps in boosting the immune system as well as improves eyesight. They are also a low calories fruit, so if you are trying to lose weight or are on a low-calorie diet, you can indulge in this fruit without any guilt. They also consist of around 88% water, so it’s great for keeping you hydrated and also making you feel full. However, it should be noted that grapefruit interferes with the absorption of certain medications and hence, if you are taking any medicines, it is advisable to consult your doctor.

2.     Blueberries

Blueberries are another low-calorie fruit that you can enjoy. They contain natural antihistamines which help in reducing inflammation and minimizing symptoms of the flu such as a stuffy or runny nose. They also contain antioxidants that help in keeping you healthy and reducing oxidative stress. It also includes flavonoids that are great for boosting your health and helping you in staying active, especially during winter months.

3.     Apples

The old adage that ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’ definitely stands true. Apples are a rich source of natural sugars and fibers. However, many people make the mistake of peeling the skin of the apple before eating it. But the skin of the apple contains quercetin which is a kind of plant pigment flavonoid known for boosting the immune system and reducing inflammation. So make sure to eat it along with the peel, and reap the benefits of the phytonutrients present in it.

4.     Pears

Pears are also a source of vitamin C. Apart from potassium and fiber, they also contain anti-inflammatory flavonoids in their peels. So just like apples, you need to make sure to eat these fruits with the peel as well.

Conclusion

Apart from these fruits, there are also a number of organic food products that can help you in boosting your immunity system. Foods such as broccoli, green leafy vegetables, turmeric, and garlic as well as dark chocolate are all foods that are great for giving your immune system a much-needed boost.
