Laser Cataract Surgery & Procedure | Bharti Eye Foundation

What Is Laser Cataract Surgery?

A cataract forms when the eye's natural lens gets cloudy. During conventional cataract surgery, a small blade is put into the front of the eye, and a separate instrument is used to make a circular incision on the lens capsule to access the cataract. Ultrasound pulses break up the cataract into tiny pieces, which are then evacuated. The new artificial lens is put in place of the old natural lens. "In laser cataract surgery, a laser is used to make the incision and lens opening as well as to fragment the lens."

Even a very skilled surgeon can't make a completely circular opening as exactly as a laser can, according to Dr. Horne; it generates a more dependable, repeatable, and precise incision.
