Home air conditioners are available in different types and sizes. You’ll find large centralized systems with outdoor compressors, small plug-in units you can mount in a window, free-standing units, and the 230-volt portable air conditioner. No matter your choice, you will find most of them with similar components, including evaporator and condenser coils, an expansion valve, a compressor, and a refrigerant. These parts work together to remove heat and moisture from indoors and take them outside.

Here are some of the types of home air conditioners you can find online and some details to help you choose the best cooling appliance for your home.

Window air-conditioners

Suitable for small homes or a single room, the window air-conditioner has a self-contained air-conditioning unit installed in a window or through a hole in an exterior wall. It is typically inexpensive and easy to install.

Portable air-conditioners

230-volt portable air conditioner can suit rooms under 500 square feet in size. It is a unitary air-conditioning system with a self-contained and mobile unit you can place on the floor in a room. It works by discharging exhaust heat with a hose vent through a window vent or exterior vent.

Like a window air conditioner, the condenser and evaporator coils are within the same box. As such, most portable air conditioners are a little noisy. However, newer models may have technologies that allow quiet operation.

Portable air-conditioners can be economical for temporary space cooling. You may also consider one when it is not practical to install a window air-conditioner.

Split air conditioners

Window air-conditioners and the 230-volt portable air conditioner can only cool. Split or ductless air conditioners can provide heating and cooling while being less expensive than an HVAC system. It can be complicated to install because it comes in two terminal units, where the condensing unit is outside the home while the evaporative unit is indoors.

Centralized air conditioner

A central air-conditioning unit is the most expensive and largest home air conditioner, but they ensure effective whole-house cooling. Similar to a split system, it comes with two units linked together by the refrigerant tubing. However, the condensing unit is boxy and bulkier, and the evaporative unit is in the furnace's plenum. That means the system uses the same blower and ductwork as your heating system.
