What Exactly is Sciatica

Sometimes it's challenging to pinpoint the cause of your back pain, but other times it's simple. One of those that is relatively easy to recognise is Sciatic. You might not even need to call a doctor because home remedies can be effective quickly.

Your lumbar (lower) spine's herniated disc is the typical source of Sciatica. Round, flat, flexible discs of connective tissue separate and protect the vertebrae, the bones that make up your spine. A disk's soft centre may start to protrude from the hard outer ring as it becomes worn down, whether from years of use or an injury.

Sciatica is a common ailment characterized by intense pain in the lower back that may radiate to the buttocks, thigh, or calf. The pain can feel like a sharp electric shock and is exacerbated by prolonged sitting. Treatment for sciatic is typically non-surgical and focuses on reducing inflammation and relieving pain.

Medications or injections may be prescribed to help reduce the inflammation and numbness around the sciatic nerve. However, non-surgical treatment is not always enough, and in some cases, patients may need more serious treatment such as surgery to relieve the compression of the sciatic nerve. Physical therapy and injections are also viable treatments for sciatic but should be used only when other non-surgical treatments are not working. Sciatica is often caused by a herniated disk in the lumbar spine. These disks are round and cushion the vertebrae. However, when the disk is worn out, the center becomes soft and can push out. This can place pressure on the nerves surrounding the disk. If left untreated, this condition may lead to chronic sciatic pain and even paralysis. Fortunately, sciatic is generally reversible with time and rest.
