Major Considerations For Installing An Absorption Chiller

Absorption Chillers have a high initial cost, however, the savings from lower operational costs can quickly pay off the initial investment. In some cases, an absorption chiller can pay for itself more quickly than an electric centrifugal chiller. It is thus, important to consider the cost of ownership over the life of the system when choosing a chiller. Absorption Chillers use water or lithium bromide as the refrigerant. These refrigerants have high specific heat and latent heat of vaporization. This enables them to operate at low internal pressures. In some cases, the internal pressure of an absorption chiller can be as low as 0.1 atmosphere.

Absorption Chillers have the advantage of being free of electric compressors, which enables them to significantly increase a facility's cooling capacity without adding to the peak demand for electricity. When determining if such a chiller is appropriate, it is important to keep in mind that they do require a sizable and steady flow of waste heat in order to operate. The most apparent options are industrial production plants, but other locations, such university campuses, larger hospital complexes, or large hotels, frequently offer major advantages for building an absorption chiller.

As the boiling temperature of fluids varies depending on their pressure, Absorption Chillers should be operated under pressures that are considerably lower than their actual boiling point. As a result, the internal temperature of the absorption chiller can be reduced significantly, resulting in a lower temperature. It will also consume less energy to heat the fluids as compared to a conventional refrigeration unit.
