Portrait Photography Ideas

1.Find Interesting Backgrounds

When capturing portraits on location, with a bit of location and creative thinking, we can transform the background and make the most out of the spot. Even an occupied location with distractions can be made look great. One way to combat a busy background is to draw the focus to your subject. For instance, place the subject in front of a fence whose depth and repetitive pattern allow us to focus on the model.

2.Experiment with Reflective Objects

One of the shortest ways to add visual appeal to your portrait photography is to give your photos depth. This can be done by placing foreground elements into your frame. Some common foreground elements to use are plants, trees, walls and handrails, and reflective surfaces - water, windows, and even cellphones. The reward in using a reflective object in your photo is that you can also hide areas in the frame that you don’t want to show - a messy floor or empty space.

3. Add a Ring of Fire

Light leaks from the camera’s imperfections or from the sun during golden hours, and light flares add a ton of visual interest to images. You can bring your own flare in-camera to create interest. An interesting technique to add some visual flare is the “ring of fire.” For this, use a short piece of copper or bronze tube to make a highlight reflection.

Just hold the tube up to the camera lens and position your subject between yourself and the light source. Utilize your subjects to barricade enough of the light. You can shoot at a wide-open aperture on a wide-angle lens to add more flare. You can bring a nice ring of light in the shot with the right angle and light power. The note is - this technique may require a bit of practice.

4.Consider Colour Theory

Colours greatly impact the visual appeal of the image. We can use colour theory and try combining complementary colours to make a striking contrast in our images. Or use a monochromatic colour scheme that contains various tints of a single colour.

5. Slow Your Shutter

Slowing your shutter speed is a great way to practice your creative photography ideas. Use slow shutter speeds to display motion in your pictures. For this technique, place your camera on a tripod.

For instance, place the subject in a dark room and ask your assistant to spin a set of string lights in a circle for two seconds. Make sure there is no little light available in the room other than the string lights.

6. Include Thematic Elements

Incorporate objects that connect to the imagery featured in the flower art backdrop. You can easily throw in a rug and vases to give the portrait a creative boost. Also, you can add thematic elements that complement your backdrop to connect your scene together and improve the quality of your portraiture.

7. Change Your Perspective

We are used to seeing at eye level. To add some interest to your portraits, adjust your perspective. This means getting low or shooting overhead (bird's eye view). An easy change in perspective can turn an image into a dynamic one. Make fun posing to capture even more dynamic.
