VOD Stands For Video On Demand, And Is A Distribution Platform That Delivers Content Via Subscriptions, Pay-Per-Views, And Rentals

VOD systems can use a download-based model, where the show is saved on the set-top box's hard drive, or they can send the show via the Internet to a computer. True VOD cannot be supported by satellite television services, even if they frequently provide Internet Video On Demand, which broadcasts the same signal over the whole service area.

In the 1990s, cable companies tried out VOD, but the services weren't very successful until the next decade, when equipment and bandwidth costs dropped and content providers started permitting more material to be distributed by VOD. On cable systems, VOD had essentially replaced schedule-driven pay-per-view service by the middle of the decade, and by 2010, the majority of television networks were making many of their shows available on VOD.

Any form of material delivery that provides viewers the freedom to select the time, location, and method of viewing is known as video-on-demand, or VOD. In other words, consumers only need to click a link to begin viewing a video. Video-on-demand at its purest can be seen, for instance, when you click the embedded YouTube video below and it begins to play.

VOD doesn't require cable or satellite connections like traditional broadcast television because it streams content over the internet. You can watch if you have adequate bandwidth!

Using any internet-capable device, consumers may now search and access pre-recorded streaming material.
