General Properties of 2205 Duplex Stainless Steel Plate


In addition to having a high level of general, localized, and stress corrosion resistance, alloy 2205 duplex stainless steel plate also has a high level of strength and outstanding impact toughness. It is an alloyed duplex stainless steel plate with 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. In practically all corrosive conditions, alloy 2205 Duplex Stainless Steel Plate offers superior pitting and crevice corrosion resistance than 316L or 317L austenitic stainless steels. Additionally, it has higher thermal conductivity and lower thermal expansion than austenitic, as well as high corrosion and erosion fatigue properties.


Compared to austenitic stainless steels, the yield strength is roughly twice as high. This makes the alloy more cost-competitive when compared to 316L or 317L and enables a designer to reduce weight. Duplex stainless steel plate made from alloy 2205 is best suited for applications requiring a temperature range of -50°F to +600°F. Temperatures outside of this range might be taken into consideration, but they need to be limited, especially for welded structures.

Hot Forming


Whenever possible, it is preferable to form below 600°F. When hot forming is necessary, the work piece should be uniformly heated and heated to a working temperature between 1750 and 2250°F. At these temperatures, alloy 2205 duplex stainless steel plate is fairly soft and easily produced. Above this point, 2205 can experience hot tearing. The austenite becomes significantly stronger than the ferrite immediately below this range and may crack, posing a particular risk to "cold" edges. Due to the interaction of temperature and deformation below 1700°F, intermetallic phases can form quickly.


Heat Treatment


Alloy 2205 duplex stainless steel plate needs to be annealed at a minimum temperature of 1900°F before being quickly cooled, ideally by water quenching. Both solution annealing and stress relief are covered by this method. Treatments for stress reduction at any lower temperature run the danger of harmful intermetallic or nonmetallic phases precipitating.


Machinability


Duplex stainless steel plate 2205 can be machined at the same feeds and speeds as alloy 316L with high-speed steel tools. Cutting speeds should be reduced by roughly 20% in comparison to speeds for Alloy 316L when carbide tooling is utilized. Strong machinery and rigid tool and part mounting are necessary.


Welding


Duplex stainless steel plate alloy 2205 has good weld ability. The purpose of welding 2205 is to maintain the base metal's corrosion resistance, strength, and toughness in the weld metal and heat-affected zone (HAZ). It is not difficult to weld 2205, but it is important to design the welding processes so that they result in a favorable phase balance after welding and prevent the precipitation of harmful intermetallic or nonmetallic phases.
