Health Tip

The human body is a complex system of organs, tissues, and cells that work together to keep us alive. The spine is the column of bones that protects the spinal cord and provides support for the head, neck, and trunk.

The spine has 24 movable vertebrae (bones) that are separated by discs of cartilage. These discs act as cushions between the vertebrae to absorb shock and allow for movement. The spinal cord is a bundle of nerves that carries messages from the brain to other parts of the body. It runs through an opening in each vertebrae called a neural foramen. Understanding the 5 following facts about your body and spine by Chiropractors in Northern Beaches will help you to take better care of your health:

1. Your spine is made up of 33 vertebrae, which are separated by discs that act as cushions. The spaces between your vertebrae give room for muscles to grow and attach.

2. The discs are made up of a tough outer layer and a soft inner layer that acts as a shock absorber.  So it's important to take care of this part of your body!

3. The discs can be damaged by injury or age, which can lead to pain and stiffness in the back and neck.

4. The spine is also supported by muscles, ligaments, and tendons that help to keep it stable and in alignment with the rest of the body. The spine has 7 cervical, 12 thoracic and 5 lumbar vertebrae.

5. A healthy spine is important for everyday activities like walking, sitting, bending over, lifting heavy objects, or even just turning your head to look at something on your left side!
