In Doppler Ultrasound, Blood Flow Is Measured Using A Special Type Of Ultrasound

Doppler ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to send and receive information about the vascular system. These waves are then used to produce images of the circulatory system.

During the test, a technician presses a small hand-held device against the skin. This allows the technician to see images of the blood vessels. Depending on the situation, the technician may also need to place pressure on a vein to see if there is a clot.

Doppler Ultrasound testing is non-invasive. By applying high frequency sound waves, or ultrasound, on the moving blood cells, it is possible to measure how much blood is flowing through the blood arteries. Several problems, including blood clots, poor leg vein valve function, congenital heart disease, heart valve defects, blocked arteries, decreased blood flow to the legs, bulging arteries, and arterial constriction, such as carotid artery stenosis, may be diagnosed with a Doppler ultrasonography.

Doppler ultrasound measures the rate of change in sound wave frequency to estimate the rate of blood flow. Since only extremely loud sound waves are used, the test is painless.

Doppler Ultrasound is frequently used during pregnancy to examine the placenta, uterus, and baby's blood flow. A more invasive treatment like angiography, in which dye is injected into the blood arteries to make their images plainly visible on X-ray, can be used as an alternative to non-invasive Doppler ultrasonic testing. Doppler ultrasound is divided into two categories: hand-held and trolley-based.

Doppler ultrasonography using a hand-held device is less expensive than one using a trolley because it uses less electricity.
