What kind of license?

There are 12 different license classes available in Ontario. You can operate only certain types of vehicles with each license. Licenses must match vehicle categories. A Class G license is a prerequisite for operating any other vehicle. The only exception is motorcycles. Motorcycle licenses of class M do not require motorcycle licenses of class G. The Driver's Licence Classification Chart can help you determine what type of license you need to operate a particular car.

Grade One (Class G1)

Level One is valid for a year. The Ministry of Transportation strongly advises all newly licensed drivers to enroll in a driver education program to develop their knowledge and abilities. To gain as much driving experience as possible, start training as soon as you are a Level One driver. With an approved course, it takes eight months to complete Level One. There are the following guidelines in effect at Level One:

Driving after consuming alcohol is prohibited.

You may not go at speeds greater than 80 km/h on highways in the 400-series.

You cannot drive alone; another driver must accompany you. You may only ride in the front seat of your vehicle with this individual. Each driver must have a valid Class G (or higher) license and at least four years of driving experience while driving with another person. If the G2 license is in good standing (not suspended), the four years of experience will count. The driving privileges that go along with them may have demerit points, but they cannot be suspended.

To advance to Level Two, you must pass a road test of your driving abilities. You will now be issued a Class G2 license.
