The basics of winter layering

Winter layering is a way to stay warm during the colder months by wearing multiple layers of clothing. The three main layers to consider are the base layer, the mid layer, and the outer layer.

The base layer is the layer that comes into direct contact with your skin. Its primary purpose is moisture management and temperature regulation. It should wick away moisture and keep you warm. Fabric choices for the base layer include synthetics like polyester and nylon, and natural materials like wool and silk. It is important to choose lightweight, breathable, and comfortable materials for this layer. Fabric weight is also a factor to consider. Lightweight fabrics are best for mid to cool conditions and are good for activities like running or cycling. Midweight fabrics can be worn as a second layer, over another base layer, or on their own in cooler conditions. Heavyweight fabrics are necessary for extremely cold conditions and are typically worn over other base layers to add warmth. Some good product recommendations for base layers include the Gildan Ultra Cotton Long Sleeve T-Shirt and the Sport-Tek PosiCharge Competitor Tee.

The mid layer provides insulation, trapping heat generated by the body to keep you warm. It should be slightly looser fitting than the base layer to allow insulating air to stay between the layers. Good materials for the mid layer include polyester fleece and jackets with down or synthetic insulation. Polyester fleece is fast drying, breathable, and keeps you warm even when damp. Down insulation has the highest warmth-to-weight ratio and compresses easily, but it dries slowly and is cold when wet. Synthetic fill is durable, lightweight, dries quickly, and retains heat when wet, but it is less breathable and doesn't pack as small as down. Some good product recommendations for mid layers include the Port Authority Fleece Jacket and the Sport-Tek Fleece Full-Zip Jacket.

The outer layer is the final layer and is responsible for protecting you from the elements such as wind, rain, and snow. It should be made of waterproof and windproof materials like Gore-Tex or nylon. The outer layer should also be breathable to prevent moisture from building up inside. Some good product recommendations for outer layers include the North Face Resolve 2 Jacket and the Marmot PreCip Eco Jacket.

By layering your clothing, you can adjust to changing weather conditions and activity levels to stay comfortable and warm all winter long. It is important to choose the right materials and fabric weights for each layer to ensure optimal warmth and protection.
