kidney biopsy

Procedure

It is done under local anesthesia. The patient has to lie on his/her belly. An ultrasound is used to locate the kidney (mostly the left side). Local anesthesia is given (that’s the part where you might feel a sharp pain for a few seconds). Once properly anesthetized, a biopsy gun is used to obtain the tissue samples (no pain now J ). Mostly 2-3 samples are taken. Once you are done a bandage is applied over the back and you will be advised to rest for the next 8 to 12 hours.

 After the procedure

After the biopsy, you can expect to:

  • Spend time in a recovery room where your blood pressure, pulse, and breathing will be monitored.
  • Have urinalysis and complete blood count tests done to check for bleeding and other complications.
  • Rest quietly for around four to six hours.
  • Receive written instructions about your recovery.
  • Feel some soreness or pain at the biopsy site for a few hours. You’ll be given medications to relieve pain.

Risks

  • Kidney biopsy is a safe procedure but sometimes complications may occur
  • slight discomfort or pain in the back at the site of kidney biopsy
  • blood in the urine
  • rarely, bleeding can occur within kidneys which requires blood transfusion and in some cases, angiography to localize and block the bleeding vessel.

Why it’s done

  • Kidney biopsy is done to diagnose the kidney disease for example abnormal creatinine, blood, or protein in the urine
  • Kidney biopsy is also done to see if the treatment you are receiving for the disease is working or not

Preparation before kidney biopsy

  • Certain medications like blood thinners for example aspirin clopidogrel have to be stopped
  • Your blood pressure should be adequately controlled
  • Certain tests have to be done to see if your blood is not too thin

Results

Kidney biopsy results are generally available after three to four days.
