LAB EQUIPMENTS USED FOR LIQUIDS

Most of the laboratory equipment is used for liquid samples or fluids. These are used for holding liquids when working in a laboratory either in school or professionally. The purpose of using these laboratory equipment is to safely  and accurately perform experiments and take measures. Using the correct laboratory equipment respective of their use is essential when conducting experiments for your safety and others as well.

Here are some common lab equipment's used for liquids:

  • Beakers
  • Thermometers
  • Pipettes Burettes & Funnels
  • Flasks
  • Evaporating Dish
  • Stir Rod

Let us know about these tools thoroughly.

Beakers

Beakers have one basic function of containers to measure and keep liquid samples or fluids. They are specifically used to hold, mix, stir and heat liquid. Beakers vary in sizes but their basic function remains the same. They are usually cylindrical with a spout for pouring liquids.

Bottles

Bottles are straight-shaped and usually have a straight neck and can be used in mixing, storing and for displaying liquids. Some of the glass bottles used to display liquids are amber in color to prevent light from affecting its content. Similar to beakers, bottles come in different sizes and shapes and can be used with a stopper.

Thermometers

Thermometer is used to measure the temperature of liquids as well as other compounds. They are marked with a calibrated scale to be able to determine the temperature taken or tested.

Pipettes, Burettes & Funnels

Pipette

It is a device for measuring and transferring small volumes of liquid that typically consists of a narrow glass tube into which the liquid is drawn by suction and kept by blocking the upper end. It is also called a chemical dropper. They come in different types, each used for a specific purpose either for laboratory experiments or medical tests.

Burettes

A burette is a cylindrical equipment which is made of glass with a stopcock at the bottom. It is used in experiments to accurately measure small quantities of liquid.

Funnel

Funnel is the most familiar item in the lab used for filtering, filling, decanting and transferring liquids or powders from one vessel to another. A funnel is an equipment used to pour liquid into another container without the risk of spilling the liquid. It is made possible by the shape of the funnel which includes a wide mouth and a narrow tube. The tube can be inserted into the container where the liquid will be poured into.

Flasks

Flasks are usually round-bottomed and are also known as Erlenmeyer Bulb. It is mainly used for heating or boiling liquids evenly. They have a cone-shaped neck with a spherical bottom and are mainly used in distillation experiments. It heats faster because of its flat base which gives a wider surface.

A volumetric flask is made of glass or plastic and is used for volumetric analysis and to prepare solutions. Like bottles, they are sometimes amber in color to prevent light from affecting the contents.

In simple words, flasks are used for making solutions or holding, containing, collecting, or sometimes volumetrically measuring chemicals, samples, solutions, etc. for chemical reactions such as mixing, heating, cooling, dissolving, precipitation, boiling, or analysis.

Evaporating Dish

Evaporating dishes are usually made of glass porcelain and are used to heat and evaporate liquids under high heat. Some evaporating dishes have a spout for pouring liquids.

Stir Rod

Stir Rod is made of glass to be able to withstand high temperatures and it is used to mix chemicals and liquids. Like the name suggests, it is basically a glass stirrer for laboratory purposes. Still have questions? Get in touch with the Accumax lab!
