ABOUT THE BUOY
The "Southernmost Point Buoy," a concrete buoy that is permanently anchored at Key West, Florida, southernmost point mark as the contiguous states of North America. The elevation is 18 feet above sea level. On September 10th, 1983, the city and Mayor Dennis Wardlow erected the huge painted buoy as a tourist draw at the crossroads of South Street and Whitehead Street. It is one of the most popular and frequently captured tourist destinations in the nation.
The southernmost point in usa was first designated by the city of Key West with a basic sign that was frequently stolen, leading to the construction of the now-famous concrete buoy in 1983 that was impossible to steal. The concrete buoy that draws tourists and photographers often endures numerous hurricanes. Hurricane Irma damaged the painting in September 2017, but the original artist later repaired it. Cuba is located around 90 miles south of this spot in Key West, though this information wasn't originally on the marker; rather, it was added later and was on a smaller sign next to it that read, "America begins here." Almost every visitor to The Conch Republic has their picture taken with the Buoy.
BUOY HISTORY
The wooden sign denoting this location's southernmost point was located before the concrete buoy. In 1970, the dated wooden sign read simply, "The Southernmost Point, of Southernmost City, Key West, Florida West, Florida one."
Florida's Key West was declared "The Southernmost Point In The USA" in 1982. A different sign was installed next to this one, with the words "90 miles to Cuba" printed on it and an arrow pointing south.
The buoy was formally inaugurated on September 10, 1983, and the Key West Public Works Department is currently in charge of maintaining it.
The painted concrete buoy is seven feet in width and twelve feet in height.
As of 2011, the buoy's inscription reads, "The Republic of Conch. Key West, Florida, home of the sunset, is the southernmost tip of the continental United States, roughly 90 miles from Cuba." In 2005, the buoy received refurbishment. The words "Home of the Sunset" and "90 miles to Cuba" were not painted on the building in 1986.
The phrase "90 miles to Cuba" was still inscribed on a smaller sign on the fence adjacent to the buoy in November 1983, but it was not included in the text.
In addition, as of November 1983, the words "America Begins" were painted on the curb next to the buoy, right below the "90 miles to Cuba" sign. Additionally, the words "Home of the Sunset" were not written on the buoy at that time.
A live camera that broadcasts footage of the street corner where the buoy is situated was established in the 2010s.
After Hurricane Irma wrecked the buoy in 2017, the City of Key West hired a local painter and artist Danny Acosta to repaint it.
The buoy went feral after being set ablaze by two criminals on New Year's Day 2022. The buoy was severely damaged, but it was swiftly fixed. Cameron Byote, a bartender, saw the SOS that David Sloan and Paul Menta, the Minister of Debauchery and Speaker of the House of Conch Republic, had placed and recognized the vandals. Cameron was given a prize, and the thieves were each fined $1,000.

A fundraising effort has been launched for the benefit of the children at Samuels House Kids and Sister Buoy Kids in Key West and Angel Inlet, respectively, as a result of the hurricanes that struck Angel Inlet and the pandemic, which resulted in the fewest tourists ever recorded there and eliminated all other sources of income for the Northernmost Buoy Point.
