Can You Colour Hair Extensions? Dos and Don’ts

Colouring hair extensions can be a great way to update your look. But if you are wondering whether you can dye them, the answer depends on the type. Moreover, there are things to know before proceeding.

Remy hair extensions can add volume, dimension, and length to your locks, but they can be quite expensive. Colouring them is a bit challenging, so it’s better to take them to a hair salon if you are not confident about dyeing them yourself. But if you think you’re up to the task and want to save money, go ahead and try dyeing them at home. Take a look at these dos and don'ts to help you with the process:

Do: Know the type

You cannot dye synthetic clip-in hair extensions. Remy hair is made of real human hair with the cuticles still intact, meaning you can dye them.

Don’t use over-the-counter bleach or highlights.

You can colour extensions made of human hair, but only of the same or darker colour. Lightening them is not advisable, but if you want to do that, leave it to a salon professional. They will carefully apply peroxide and bleach in ample amounts to avoid stripping the hair cuticle and excessive treatment that could leave the hair extensions feeling and looking like straw.

Do: Perform a strand test before you begin.

Do a strand test to see how the colour fares on Remy hair extensions.

Don’t attempt to dye artificial hair.

Synthetic extensions are already chemically treated and cannot survive dyeing or bleaching.

Do: Pick the perfect shade.

Choose colours from a professional hair developer and the colour line, as drugstore or box dyes might not produce optimum results. Experts often recommend a demi-permanent colour or a 10-volume developer. If it’s your first time dyeing clip-in hair extensions, try a subtle colour change to prevent breakage or damage.

Don’t skip the hair prep.

Wash your hair extensions before colouring. Be sure to use extensions-friendly shampoo and air-dry them.

Do: Continue caring for your coloured hair extensions.

Use sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner to keep the colours vibrant while wearing them. Avoid washing your hair too frequently, as this can make the colour fade faster and dry your hair.
