Facts about Flight Instruction

Pilots can be classified into nine categories: airline transport, student, sport, recreational, private, instrument-rated, commercial, certified flight instructor, and designated pilot examiner. By achieving better ratings, you can advance via these various skill levels.

This rating system specifies the types of aircraft you are permitted to fly, whether you are permitted to transport passengers, and the types of weather you are permitted to fly in. Even before you can be recruited as a pilot, you must obtain a rating. Additionally, before flying, every pilot needs to have a valid certificate of good health from a doctor recognised by the FAA.

The student pilot certificate serves as the first step in flight instruction. You must pass a written test, an oral test, a ground school exam, and a flight test in order to obtain this certification and any following certifications (also known as your pilot's licence). In the beginning, aspiring pilots fly with an approved flying instructor. You will be given the green light to fly alone once you have mastered a set of fundamental skills. Every student flight must occur close to their "home" airport. You are permitted to travel to and from another airport with your instructor's approval, however a student pilot is not permitted to transport people.

You must be 17 years old to upgrade your rating to that of a sport, recreational, or private pilot. Recreational pilots must stay within 58 miles of their home airport unless they receive the express instructor consent. They fly only for leisure.

Sport and recreational pilots are only permitted to fly in airspace that allows communication with air traffic controllers, and they are only permitted to carry one passenger. Recreational pilots can apply for airspace. Many pilots continue on to the private pilot rating, which has fewer restrictions, at this point. Contact a flight school and speak to a flight instructor for further details on the more advanced stages of flight instruction and learn to fly.
