The Workstation Is Designed To Handle Complex Data Manipulation And Visualization Tasks

Workstation fall between personal computers and minicomputers in terms of computational power, while the distinction is hazy on either end. Low-end workstations are comparable to high-end personal PCs. In addition, premium workstations are on par with minicomputers. The majority of workstations are single-user computers, just as personal PCs. Workstations can be used as standalone systems, but they are frequently connected to one another to form a local area network.

For specialized tasks like computer-aided design (CAD), engineering, or scientific computations, a high-performance computer is employed. Workstation have strong graphics cards that can produce complex pictures in real-time and are made to manage numerous jobs at once. This enables users to fully utilise software like SolidWorks 2016 SP1, Autodesk Maya, Adobe Photoshop, etc. even if their computer lacks one or more specialised graphics cards.

The Xerox Corporation first used the term "Workstation" in 1981 to describe their Star computer line. They utilised a graphical user interface (GUI) with icon-based commands rather than text commands and were based on the Motorola 68000 microprocessor. The Macintosh 128K personal computer with an icon-based graphical user interface (GUI) known as Mac OS System 7 was produced by Apple Computer in 1984. This signalled the start of the widespread adoption of GUIs on both workstations and desktop computers.
