Science-backed advantages of including organic fruits in your diet

In recent years, most people have become increasingly health-conscious, and rightfully so. The advent of the global pandemic was an indication that we need to focus on our health more than anything else. And it is well known that good health can be achieved from within. A healthy and balanced diet is the key to living a healthy life. Including seasonal fruits and vegetables throughout the year in your diet is a great way of ensuring that you are consuming a balanced diet.

Reasons to Include Organic Fruits in your diet

The age-old adage that ‘An apple a day keeps the doctor away’ is surely true. Various studies have shown the benefits of including fruits in your diet. However, recently, a shift in preference towards organic foods has been noticed. Many consumers prefer organic food products because they are better for the environment. But most do so because of health-related reasons. Understanding the health benefits of consuming organic fruits can help you in making an informed decision. The following are some science-backed benefits of eating organic foods:

Lesser Amount of Heavy Metals and Pesticides

Grains, vegetables, and fruits that are certified as organic are grown without using any artificial fertilizers or chemical pesticides. The amounts used for conventionally grown foods are quite limited. However, repeated exposure to such chemicals can be harmful. For example, a herbicide called Roundup has been deemed as a ‘probable human carcinogen’. Other studies show that some pesticides used for growing foods can also result in ADHD in kids. Reduced sperm quality in men has also been linked to these pesticides.

Say Goodbye to GMOs

If you want to avoid GMOs then eating organic is the way to go. Genetic modification is prohibited when growing organic products. Thus, organic farmers cannot use genetically modified seeds. Similarly, the livestock they are growing is also not allowed to consume GMO fodder. It is crucial for farmers and processors to present evidence that they are not using any kind of GMOs.

No artificial Colors or Flavors

In order to make fruits look fresh and appealing, artificial colors are used. Preservatives are also used for ensuring that they last longer. The usage of artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives is not allowed when growing or processing organic foods. Less than 40 synthetic substances can be used for organic foods. Moreover, these need to be reviewed by experts before they hit the shelves.

More Nutritious

Studies have shown time and again that organic foods contain more amounts of minerals, enzymes, vitamins, and micronutrients than food that is grown conventionally. A study conducted for six years found that there is more antioxidant and flavonol content in organic foods. Similarly, it was also found that organic bananas are richer in minerals and potassium than conventionally grown bananas.

Conclusion

These are some important advantages of consuming organic fruits. Apart from this, organic food products are also beneficial for the environment. Eating organic fruits and vegetables is one way of reducing your carbon footprint. Organic farming also helps improve the quality of the soil. All in all, there are several benefits of eating organic fruits.
