Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) Is A Serious Medical Condition That Plays An Important Role In The Diagnosis, Treatment, And Prevention Of Blood Clots

The CEC VTE Prevention Program seeks to minimise the incidence of hospital associated VTE by ensuring that all patients are screened for VTE risk and provided adequate treatment. The initiative offers the tools and resources necessary to solve this patient safety concern, as well as the assistance and guidance needed to integrate the aspects into workflow, to local health districts, individual institutions, and clinicians. The Medication Safety and Quality programme at CEC includes a component called the Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) Prevention programme.

Occasionally blood can collect and harden inside healthy, normal veins, obstructing blood flow throughout the body. A blood clot, sometimes referred to as a venous thromboembolism in medicine, is what this is Venous Thromboembolism (VTE). It consists of blood clots that develop in the deep veins (deep vein thrombosis, or DVT), as well as clots that lodge in the lungs (pulmonary embolism) (PE).

In Australia, VTE is one of the main causes of death that may be avoided. Compared to bowel cancer, breast cancer, and auto accidents, it is the leading cause of mortality. Every year, over 14,000 Australians acquire a Venous Thromboembolism (VTE). In around 5,000 of these situations, a fatality occurs1. The majority of VTEs may be avoided, and hospitalisation is significantly linked to their development. Assessing risk factors and offering the right prophylactic are the keys to effective prevention.
