The ultimate ethnic wear guide for men

The bride-to-be's wardrobe frequently receives a lot of attention, to the point that the groom's tastes may take a backseat. But, grooms should have equal opportunities to enjoy themselves as they pick their outfits.

An Indian wedding is an ideal occasion to unleash your inner sartorialist and experiment with a variety of traditional menswear because of the abundance of pre-wedding festivities and events. Not sure what to wear for each significant event preceding the "I dos"?

If you're just starting your wardrobe planning, take a cue from musician Nick Jonas, who wed actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas in a small ceremony in India. He dressed in an ivory cotton kurta and churidar with self-embroidery for the mehendi. He wore a jewel-tone silk sherwani jacket over a matching kurta for the sangeet.

For the pheras, there was a traditional beige sherwani ensemble with a matching embroidered stole and turban (safa).

Uncertain of the meaning of these silhouettes?

We break them down for you below.

Kurta Sets

The kurta is a simple garment that is frequently used for pre-wedding festivities. It may easily be dressed up or down since it is made of cotton, linen, and silk. Designers are experimenting with length and dimensions to give it a more contemporary vibe. Traditionally, it was full-sleeved and calf-skimming.

For daytime celebrations such as wedding lunches or the mehendi, you can experiment with prints and solid colours; for evening events like the sangeet, go for embroidered kurtas. You can also wear them with cotton ankle-length pants instead of the more common churidar (traditional legging-style trousers).

The Nehru or Bandi Jacket

The real star of an Indian man's traditional wardrobe is a bandi set. It instantly dresses up a plain kurta, can be worn in various ways by mixing and matching pieces, and is quite comfortable. What a classic one-and-done!

The Nehru jacket, a crucial aspect of the bandi set, is a hip-length fitted coat with a mandarin collar available in various designs, colours, textures, and embroideries. It was popularised by former Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Mens waistcoat can be worn under a kurta with a muted colour or a contrasting design. You can go tone-on-tone or layer a solid colour over a noisy graphic.

Jodhpuri Suit

The official attire of India is the bandh gala. Since it was created in the 19th century in the princely state of Jodhpur, it is also known as the Jodhpuri. The suit frequently referred to as the "eastern tuxedo," consists of a structured, closed-collar jacket that hangs below the waist and is worn with slim pants or broaches.

For a polished appearance, leave your bandhgala's top two buttons undone. For occasions like the sangeet, reception, or engagement, grooms like the bandh gala since it is both formal and immensely regal. Consider it a suitable alternative to a traditional three-piece suit.

The idea that men have fewer options than their brides is untrue. There are several contemporary interpretations of traditional Indian clothing on the market now. Every occasion on your wedding schedule might easily have a variety of outfits planned. In the past, Indian menswear was straightforward and secure, but not anymore, with labels like Anita Dongre. Even the groom can have various choices to make their wedding more special.
