While About 2% Of All Vehicles Sold In The US In The Early 1980s Were Sports Utility Vehicle (SUVs)

The 1970s gas crisis led to significant modifications in American driving practices. Many Americans decided to switch from their gas-guzzling muscle vehicles to a more environmentally friendly option due to gasoline shortages, lengthy lineups at the pump, and encouragement from prominent figures like President Jimmy Carter. Many motorists opted for either tiny European or Japanese vehicles, while others came to appreciate the adaptability of foreign trucks. Others discovered that they required a car that could pull a trailer or boat.

Both General Motors and Ford provided substitutes for the imports in 1983, including a scaled-down Blazer, the Jimmy, and the Bronco II. Drivers in 1980s vehicles were considerably different from those who had acquired military Jeep conversions. The new generation of Sports Utility Vehicle (SUVs) buyers featured a sizable proportion of women who wanted an alternative to the station wagon and later the minivan rather than a vehicle for off-road use.

Manufacturers of Sports Utility Vehicle (SUVs) added luxuries such as horsepower, high-tech sound systems, improved handling, and the ability to "change on the fly" from two-wheel drive to four-wheel drive in an effort to cater to these different drivers.

Also, producers started producing a range of sizes, from the little Suzuki Sidekick (which weighed under 3,000 pounds and could tow a paltry 1,500 pounds) to the Chevrolet and GMC Suburban, which are the behemoths of the Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) crowd and can pull 10,000 pounds while weighing over two tonnes. Around one in every eight cars sold in the United States in 1998 were SUVs, and this trend does not appear to be slowing down as baby boomer children leave the nest and their still-young parents have time and energy for leisure pursuits.
